Zachary Zabatta, was killed Saturday, Oct. 12, in the crash that also critically injured his younger sister, Sophia and his mother and father, according to a GoFundMe page and officials at his school, St. Mary's High School in Manhasset.
According to the GoFundMe page, the entire family is currently hospitalized and it's unclear when they will be able to return home.
"The Zabatta's are a much loved and involved family in the New Hyde Park community," the GoFundMe page organizer wrote. "We are starting this GoFundMe page in an effort to assist a family that has given so much to everyone around them."
Zabatta, who was set to graduate next year, was consistently at the top of his class, choosing to take the most challenging AP courses and finding great success in them, St. Mary's said on Facebook.
"We are all in shock at this moment," school officials said. "This tragedy is a devastating loss, especially for our young people."
The funds that are raised on the GoFundMe page will ease some of the enormous financial burdens that lie ahead.
"The logistical expenses of being stranded in a foreign country include medical, transport, and funeral costs. Additional monies raised will be used to create a scholarship fund in Zachary's name," the page organizer said.
To date, some $81,000 of a $100,000 has been raised.
